In a 45-42 nail biter, Mountain Pointe out lasted its Arizona rivals, Chandler.
Going into the game, Pointe boasted a 4-0 record, scoring at least 48 points and never allowing more than 13 in all four games. The Pride earned the 15th rank in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings and 1st in Arizona.
Right behind them, Chandler, with a 3-0 record going into the game, ranked 18th in the nation and 2nd in the state.
Mountain Pointe got off to a great start, scoring 20 points in the first quarter compared to Chandler’s seven. The second quarter was the busiest of them all. The Pride scored 22 points, but Chandler was right behind with 21 of their own, leading to a 42-28 halftime score line in Pointe’s favor.
The second half was a completely different story. The Wolves cut Mountain Pointe’s lead down to own possession with the lone touchdown of the third quarter.
The teams entered the final quarter with Mountain Pointe leading 42-35. The Pride kicked off the scoring with a field goal. Chandler found the endzone with about five minutes remaining in the game. After Mountain Pointe attempted to run the clock out, the Wolves got the ball back with only 22 seconds left and 91 yards too many to score.
Mountain Pointe’s running game was unstoppable. Paul Lucas set a school record with 244 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Brandyn Leonard followed up with 176 yards and three scores on 16 carries. In total the Pride finished with 542 total offensive yards.
Diving right back into a difficult game, Mountain Pointe faces Hamilton on Friday, September 26. Hamilton currently ranks 52nd in the nation and 3rd in Arizona.
